Enhance your studies by completing a certificate in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. Our certificate allows you to add another qualification to your degree, satisfying a specific academic or professional interest – without investing more time or money.

Cultural & Artistic Practice for Environmental & Social Justice

  • 3 semesters
  • 1 to 5 courses per semester
  • Fall, Winter and Summer entry
  • Concurrent with BES or direct entry

The first of its kind in Canada, this certificate allows you to develop creative artistic skills, deepen your social analysis and learn to work collaboratively with community arts groups. You will gain real-world experience in placements with local cultural agencies and community organizations.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing

  • 2 to 3 semesters
  • 1 to 5 courses per semester
  • Fall and Winter entry
  • Concurrent with BES, BA or BSc, or direct entry

This certificate encompasses the art, science and technology involved in collecting and managing geographically referenced information. You will learn applied skills that include computer cartography, statistical techniques, satellite image processing and remote sensing to strengthen and enhance your degree.

Sustainable Energy

  • Concurrent with BES only

This certificate allows you to explore and gain applied skills in the area of sustainable energy, specifically in energy efficiency, conservation and demand management, and renewable energy sources. You will discover sustainable energy technologies and practices as the foundations of cost-effective strategies to prevent dangerous climate change. You will also acquire expertise in sustainable energy policy, economics, law, technology, management, communications and evaluation, along with hands-on applied training.

Urban Ecologies

  • Concurrent with BES only

In this certificate, you will explore how the conflicts between natural and urban environments emerge, are represented and can be addressed. Exploring the many connections between the two kinds of environments, you’ll learn how thoughtful planning can help address contemporary problems.

Additional Details

Admission Requirements

  • Cultural and Artistic Practice certificate is open to those who hold a degree with at least a 2.3 GPA or mature applicants.
  • GIS & Remote Sensing certificate is open to those who hold a degree with at least a 2.3 GPA.
  • Sustainable Energy and Urban Ecologies can only be completed concurrently with a BES degree.  Students interested in either of these certificates should follow the admission requirements for the BES degree and can add on either certificate during their studies by speaking with their academic advisor.

How to Apply

Deadlines can be found on the York university Future Students website.

  1. Complete an Online Application Form. Apply online, using the York University application.
  2. Pay the application fee.
  3. Submit supporting documents through the York University online portal, MyFile. Within four business days of application, you will receive a confirmation email with your nine-digit student reference number, which will allow you to access your MyFile account and upload documents.
