Entrance Scholarships and Awards for NEW Undergraduate Students

Purpose

The Dean's Entrance Scholarship for Environmental & Urban Change (EUC) is awarded based on academic excellence and will be given annually to the five high school students (domestic) admitted to the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change with the highest entrance averages. This scholarship is only applicable to the Fall entrance cycle.

Eligibility

  • The top 5 incoming applicants that accept their offer of admission will be granted this award from EUC. Adjudication of this award will be completed prior to June 1 and offered to the highest students through either in-person visits, telephone or by email.

Criteria

  • Academic excellence for incoming undergraduate students
  • Must be registered full time in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change for the upcoming fall session as a condition of receiving the scholarship

  • Scholarships will be awarded to the top five domestic high school applicants admitted to the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change.

Purpose

The Unilever Canada Undergraduate Entrance Award in Environmental Studies is a prestigious student award that supports an incoming Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change undergraduate student who has achieved a minimum 80% GPA, demonstrates financial need, and has written an excellent essay on the student's vision of sustainability. Recipient must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and an Ontario resident.

Eligibility

  • This award is open to incoming undergraduate students registered in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change at York University.

Purpose

The Sgro Academic Leadership Entrance Award has been established in honour of Franco and Rosa Sgro, models of integrity, honour and excellence and true inspirations to their children. The award will be given annually to an undergraduate student accepted into the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, or the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change, who intends to focus on Geography, and/or Urban Studies/Planning.

Eligibility

  • Minimum grade point average of 7.00 (B+)
  • Proven history of community leadership centered on improving and strengthening their home communities.
  • Applicants must submit a statement describing their interest in the field of Geography or Urban studies/Planning.

Application Requirements

  • You will be required to submit a resume that includes information about community leadership activities that focus on improving and strengthening your home communities.
  • You will be required to write a statement describing your interest in the field of Geography or Urban Studies/Planning, or real estate law.

The Honourable George and Helen Vari generously donated this award to support incoming undergraduate students entering their first year in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change at York University. Recipients are selected based on financial need and academic merit. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and Ontario residents.

Purpose

The Han Shan Sih Buddhist Society Bursary is a bursary intended to provide financial aid to all undergraduate and masters EUC students.

Eligibility

  • This award is open to students enrolled in an undergraduate or masters programs in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change.

Purpose

The Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change’s Specialist High Skills Major Awards (SHSM) were created to recognize a high school student's passion for sustainable change. Students that have completed a SHSM program in Environment, Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, Arts & Culture or Horticulture & Landscaping and are entering the Bachelor in Environmental Studies, or Geography program at York University for a Fall start are eligible for these awards.

Eligibility

  • Consideration will be automatically given to all high school applicants who have identified on their OUAC application to the Bachelor in Environmental Studies or Geography at York University, their completion of one of the SHSM programs in Environment, Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, Arts & Culture or Horticulture & Landscaping and have achieved a minimum admission average of 75%.

Criteria

  • OUAC applications to the BES, BA or BSC Geography program that identify a specific SHSM program and have a minimum of 75% admission average.
  • Must be a registered full time EUC undergraduate student for the upcoming Fall term.

No Application Required

  • Other than the notification on the OUAC application as described above, no application is required.

Scholarships and Awards for CURRENT Undergraduate Students

Eligibility

  • Alectra Inc. Undergraduate Award in Sustainable Energy will be available to talented and eager EUC undergraduate students who wish to focus their studies in the areas of conservation, efficiency and/or renewable energy. Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, Ontario residents and must demonstrate financial need.

Criteria

  • Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement, area of focus for study and a 250 word statement of interest that demonstrates alignment of their proposed program with areas of conservation, efficiency and/or renewable energy.
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the BES Certificate in Sustainable Energy.

Purpose

This is an annual award given by the Canadian Association of Geographers. The winner will receive a complimentary membership in the CAG for the following year and her/his name will be published in the CAG Newsletter.

This award is presented to the most outstanding students graduating in Geography Honours programs at universities across Canada.

Purpose

The Canon Canada Environmental Studies Scholarship will be awarded annually to continuing undergraduate students enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change.  

Eligibility

Open to continuing undergraduate students enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change

Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 7.5

Criteria

Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay on the topic: What kind of sustainable strategies should a company like Canon Canada pursue to reduce their environmental impact in their day to day operations (excluding manufacturing)?

The essay should be reflective of the Canon Canada company, and solutions proposed should not include any of the company’s existing initiatives. This award will provide recipients with the (optional) opportunity to meet with the donor. By applying for this scholarship students acknowledge that, should they be selected as the recipient, their essay will be shared with Canon Canada to be featured in communications which may be shared with internal and external stakeholders.

Purpose

The dian marino Award was established in memory of dian, a visual artist, activist, educator and storyteller extraordinaire, who taught in the Faculty of Environmental Studies. She lived courageously with cancer and died in 1993. This fund supports students who creatively use multi-media tools of inquiry and modes of communication to critically explore environmental issues. This award gives preference to students who are committed to environmental and social justice.

Eligibility

  • This award is available to all students in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change who critically disrupt and playfully reframe the traditional boundaries of environmental teaching and learning. Given that dian was passionately committed to equity and diversity, the Faculty strongly encourages students from diverse backgrounds to apply.

  • Have a good academic record.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • This award is open to all EUC students (Bachelor, Master and PhD)

Purpose: The Hans Carol Prize is donated by the friends and colleagues of the late Hans Carol (1915-1971).

Eligibility: This prize is awarded annually and is intended to recognize the academic achievements of a third-year student enrolled in a major or minor in Global Geography in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change.

No Application required.

This award will go to the full-time continuing undergraduate student majoring in sociology, psychology, political science, geography, economics or anthropology, who has achieved the highest grade point average on a minimum of five full courses least one of which is in the major in the previous fall/winter.

No application is required to be eligible for this Scholarship. Students are selected based on academic merit.

Purpose

This is award was established through a bequest in memory of the late Mark Nawrot, former student in the Faculty.

Eligibility

Open to full time undergraduate students enrolled in a four year Bachelor in Environmental Studies (BES) program and who are conducting research or presenting at an academic conference. For conference attendance, preference will be given to students who are presenting or co-presenting papers or posters. Preference will also be given to student undertaking Senior Honours Work (ENVS 4011).

Criteria

  • Applicants must submit an outline of their field work plans, the conference program or other related documents
  • A 200 word statement explaining how this activity will help the applicant pursue their learning goals is required.
  • Applicants must submit a one page budget for their research activity
  • Applications must include a Reference Assessment Form completed by a professor teaching in the BES program, with whom they have taken a class in the last year

Rajiv Goel Memorial Scholarship was established in honour of the late Rajiv Goel; he preserved in the face of adversity.

Eligibility

The award is open to current undergraduate students enrolled in their third or fourth year in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change.

  • Demonstrate academic excellence (minimum 7.5 GPA)
  • Identify as Black or Indigenous.
  • Have a history of community leadership centered on improving and strengthening their home communities.

Purpose

Established in honour of Harry Victor, father of the Faculty's Dean, Peter Victor (1996-2001), this bursary supports continuing students enrolled in the BES Sustainable Environmental Management and BES Environmental Arts & Justice at York University. More specifically, it supports research undertaken by an undergraduate student in the areas of ecological economics or environmental policy.

Eligibility

  • This bursary is open to undergraduate students registered in the Bachelor of Environmental Studies program at York university who are pursuing research in the areas of ecological economics or environmental policy.
  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons.
  • Be Ontario residents.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be registered in good standing in the BES program.
  • Undertaking research in areas of ecological economics or environmental policy.

Criteria

  • Applicants will be judged based on level of financial need and demonstrated interest in ecological economics or environmental policy, reflected in a 500-word statement about their proposed research activities.

Purpose

The YUFA Foundation scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change who has completed between 60 to 90 credits and achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change.

Eligibility

  • A generous donation by the York University Faculty Association has made possible awards of substantial value to the top students in the Faculties of Arts, Atkinson, Education, Environmental & Urban Change, Fine Arts, Glendon, Health, Osgoode, Science and Engineering and the Schulich School of Business. The recipients will have completed between 60 and 90 credits at York University, achieved the best cumulative grade point average in their Faculty, and will subsequently re-register at York to complete their undergraduate degree program. This scholarship may be held only once and will be payable at the time of the re-registration. Students who are co-registered in the concurrent education program will only be considered for this award by the Faculty of Education.

Purpose

Professor John Warkentin is among the best-known and most widely respected geographers in Canada. This award, named in his honour, is sponsored by the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change. The value of the bursary is up to $500 and awarded annually to one or more undergraduate students who meet the award criteria.
