Future Changemakers Summer Program

The Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change at York University is hosting it's first ever Summer camp. This experience is the place to be for young minds ready to make a difference! 

Are you a high school student starting Grade 10, 11 or 12 in September? Join us for a week of learning, growing, and fun. Our camp is packed with exciting activities, workshops, and guest speakers to inspire and empower the next generation of changemakers.

Make Positive Change

Learn about and create solutions to the grand challenges facing people and the planet each day. We explore issues such as climate change, indigenous justice, urbanization and cities, and how to build just and sustainable communities.

Experiential Education

Learning happens inside and outside of the classroom. We will bring hands-on learning through community experience on-campus and in Toronto.

Off-campus trips will include: Toronto Blue Jays Baseball game, Art Gallery of Ontario, Nathan Philips Square and much more!

Each day of will be based on one of our five undergraduate degree programs: Cities, Region, Planning (CRP), Environmental Arts and Justice (EAJ), Environmental Science, Global Geography, Sustainable Environmental Management (SEM).

Dates and times

Monday, July 22nd to Friday, July 26th, 2024 from 9am to 4pm*.

*May be later depending on fieldtrip travel times.


Location

Daily arrivals and departures from York University's Keele Campus.


Fees

The registration fee is $161.08 total.

This fee includes daily lunch and snacks, one ticket to the Toronto Blue Jays Game, multi-day passes on the TTC for fieldtrips, and the Event Brite service charge.  

We are dedicated to ensuring financial access for all interested students. To be considered for 75% discount on registration fees, please complete the bursary application form.

What can a camper expect?

  • Interactive workshops with current students, alum and faculty members covering a range of academic subjects and specializations provided by EUC 
  • A chance to enhance leadership and interpersonal skills through activities and workshops. 
  • Create a list of all the ways we can collaboratively create positive changes for a just and sustainable future  
  • Experiences that extend beyond the classroom on and off campus.  
  • A series of learning activities for you produce ideas for promoting change in your own community.
  • Daily agendas will be sent upon registration

Do I have to attend all the workshops/ activities?

Participants are expected to attend all workshops and activities.  There are no pro-rated fees or discounts available if a camper misses a day during the camp.

Who are the instructors and counsellors? 

Our instructors are undergraduate/graduate Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change students, teacher candidates, Ontario Certified Teachers, and York University Faculty members. 

What are the Learning outcomes of your camp?

By the end of the Future Changemakers Summer Program participants will gain a range of learning outcomes some are:  

  1. Understand the significance of a degree from a postsecondary institution.  
  1. What academic offerings does the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change have to offer, and how do they support the growth of the individual and the professional.  
  1. Explore the spatial arrangement and surroundings of York University.  
  1. Make connections between our current cities' design and how they hinder our pollinators.  
  1. Identify the relationship between lakes and the communities that surround them. 
  1. analyze the influence of mass media, including the Internet, on social and political change and the protection of human rights.   

Will food be provided? 

Yes, light snacks and lunch including will be provided. 

What happens after I complete my eventbrite registration? 

You can anticipate to receive an email from eucapply@yorku.ca with your welcome package (detailed agenda and additional forms to be completed). 

When does it start 

Future Changemakers Summer Program 2024 will start on July 22nd and run until July 26th, 2024, from 8:30 am – 4 pm. 

Pick up and Drop – Off  

Participants must be dropped off/ sign in between 8:30 am – 9:00am and picked up/ sign out between 3:30 pm – 4pm. On the day of our Downtown Toronto field trip (July 25th) participants must be picked up at the Rogers Centre after the game, unless they have been authorized to leave after the game by parent permission. 

What do I need to bring?

We do suggest bringing a refillable water bottle, lunch for the says it is not provided, and any dietary specific snacks! 

Will the camp be solely at the Keele Campus?

This camp will occur on our Keele Campus, but there will be times when we have off-campus field trips. 

Where are you located?

Now easily accessible via TTC York University Subway Station! Our Programs are located on the York University Keel Campus at 4700 Keele Street. Exact room locations are provided in the Welcome Package after registration.

Is there a refund available?  

All of the refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to eucapply@yorku.ca.

Refunds will be processed based on the date the written request is received.

Cancellation more than 30 days before camp starts gets a full refund; Cancellations 15-29 days before camp starts a 75% refund will be issued, cancellation less than 15 days before camp starts no refunds will be issued, except in cases of medical emergencies. 

How can I be assured of the safety and security of my child while on campus?

York University and the Faculty of EUC takes safety and Security very seriously. There will be a safety and security plan in place for on campus and off campus activities. For more information please look at the campus security website. .
