Nature-Based Learning
Description
Students become immersed in learning about Indigenous culture and traditional ecological knowledge for the purpose of understanding the roots and basis of evolving Indigenous consultation. This experience type focuses on facilitating the involvement and deep connection of non-separation between people and the natural world.
Examples
Examples include:
- Indigenous-led ecological conservation projects to protect species
- Traditional harvesting practices
- Green landscape mapping at local sites to evaluate historical land changes
- On-campus Indigenous and Western science blending
Faculty Involvement
EUC faculty members serve to facilitate learning through hands-on network partnerships with Indigenous communities that may include field trips and guided reflections. Faculty members should aim at improving relations with Indigenous communities. Projects can be carried out individually or in interdisciplinary teams.
Partner Involvement
Lead land-based activities, share traditional ecological knowledge and guide students in culturally appropriate practices.
