My interests focus on teaching and research around landscape disturbances and how they impact ecosystem processes. I’m particularly interested in the connection between physical disturbances and ecosystem changes, including the biogeography of organisms. My current research is examining how marine storm surges in the Mackenzie Delta of the western Canadian Arctic result in widespread salinization, fundamentally altering terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. I use lake sediment records to reconstruct past environments where direct monitoring data are sparse or absent, in order to understand past ecosystem changes. In my teaching I stress the interconnectedness of environmental processes and impacts. I am particularly interested in the use of technology in a teaching framework. I have worked over the past year to integrate the use of the hydraulic flume in geomorphology teaching in several of my courses on the topic.
