Virtual High School Lecture: "Toxic Algae Blooms in Ontario Lakes" with TDSB Virtual School
May 13 @ 10:00 am - 10:45 am
The Recruitment and Admissions team invite TDSB Virtual School to connect with us for our virtual high school lecture "Toxic Algae Blooms in Ontario Lakes" by Prof. Lewis Molot.
Populations of algae, microscopic photosynthetic organisms, occur naturally in lakes, supporting the food chain. However, when lakes receive large amounts of a plant nutrient called phosphorus from farms and cities, they turn green from high population densities of a group of algae called cyanobacteria. Many types of cyanobacteria are highly toxic, producing nasty liver and nerve toxins which pose a serious health threat to pets, livestock and people. This lecture describes the phenomenon called ‘eutrophication’ and what we can do about it.
This is a closed event.
