
Description: Provides students with an introduction to the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as they are commonly used to address contemporary environmental issues. Various applications, techniques and theoretical frameworks are presented to provide a critical appreciation of this geo-spatial technology. Students gain hands-on experience using industry standard software products and associated technologies (ie. Global positioning systems) to increase their ability to apply these computer-based methods of geographic inquiry. A wide range of case studies, research projects and laboratory assignments are used to demonstrate the principles of the growing area of study.
