Program Requirements

To understand the official requirements laid out by the university, please refer to the Academic Calendar. This site will provide information on the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that oversee your studies at York University.

It’s helpful to understand all the requirements for your degree, as they are based on the year you started your program. If you have changed your major or are returning to your studies after being away for a year or more, your program requirements may have shifted. Please reach out to EUC’s Academic Advising Team to better understand whether there have been any changes to your program requirements.

General Degree Requirements

All programs have the following key components:

  • General Education made up from a combination of Natural Science, Humanities, and Social Science requirements
  • Major Core Course Requirements which are specific to your program.
  • Upper-Level requirements refer to 3000 and 4000 level core courses.
  • Free Electives which can be chosen from any program or course offered by EUC or another faculty within York University.

GPA Requirements

If you are in the 4-year Honours program, you will need to maintain a minimum GPA of 5.0 for graduation, while students in the 3-year 90-Degree program will need to maintain a minimum GPA of 4.0. These rules about academic standing are designed to ensure students meet these GPA requirements by the end of their program. If you are worried that your GPA is below the minimum for your program, please speak with your Academic Advisor who can provide support and advice to help you keep on track.

Using the Degree Progress Reports or DPR, will help you to track your course progression from one term to another. This helpful tool provides information about any transfer credits you might have, your GPA, what courses you have successfully completed and which requirements you still need to complete. If you are not sure how to read your DPR, please connect with the our Student Success Mentor Leads and they would be happy to help you out. Additionally, you can book an appointment with your Academic Advisor. Another tool that may help is the GPA calculator. This tool calculates your current GPA and allows you to know what grades you need to meet your program or personal goals.
