The research aimed to critically investigate the role of investor rights provisions in trade and investment agreements in the ability and/or willingness of Canadian law makers to enact tough environmental laws. The research focused on trade and investment regimes and how they affected regulatory decision-making with respect to the environment, primarily in cases of resource extraction.
